Can people live in peace together when deeply held beliefs and views are in conflict?
Should the international community play a role in helping countries establish self-determination?
Is it ever OK for victims to become the persecutors?
Is violence justified when access to resources is cut off?
Does the Holocaust excuse Israel from overreaching partition boundaries with Palestine?
No, because when beliefs and views clash, it will not allow peace to be made.
They could contribute to establish it, but when it comes down to it; the country has to come together.
I couldn't see the victim becoming the persecutor, unless they feel as if they are being persecuted against; and the returning action feels like it should be returned.
It can be justified in my opinion, as long as it is done with the feel of being threatened and doing it in self defense.
Past conflicts should not be what makes future conflicts okay to occur, they should not be what prompts an additional conflict since they have been over and done with by then.
DJ on Israeli- Palestine video: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gyTro4HFq9tKKds9WcN6HD8jVVQmBAeTzEhfxQ5_ZGc/edit?usp=sharing Reflection:
This video is biased in favor of the Palestinian point of view, as it covers what they were treated with, as well as identifying the American support against them which shows how much power is against them. The Jews were seen as bullies throughout this video, as the Palestinians gave their point of view on how the Jews were victimizing them, as they duhumanized and discriminated against the Palestinians.
Part 1 Guide Questions Reflection: 1. What information did you find most interesting about the conflict from this portion of the reader? 2. Explain and give examples of how other nations and international organizations impacted the conflict.
1. From this portion of the reader, I find it most interesting that the diversity of religion was something that became a major conflict, as well as the land of Palestine holding value to almost every type of these religions. 2. Other nations including the United States, impacted the conflict by providing weaponry as well as arsenal to Israel, in order for them to protect their land. This created greater chaos than there already was.
Israel Palestine Map opener:
Timeline of Israel Palestine.PNG
Palestine began as the entire region- Palestinians occupied the entire region, and controlled everything of the Dead Sea
1946, small Israel owned portions- Israel's government began to control particular sections of the dead sea
Israel's occupancy starts to increase (green)- dead sea partitioned, Palestine lost the majority of its land in less than a year
by 2012, Israel almost entirely switched places in occupancy with Palestine in comparison to 1946.- Israel took over the majority of Palestine, ruled it
Gaza stayed under the occupancy of Palestine throughout all the years.- Palestine with the exception of Gaza was controlled by Israel.
1948-1949 to 1967, occupancy of Dead Sea remained the same- UN claimed the land could not be taken in the result of the war
Reflection on Part 2 Guide Questions:
1. They hoped that the splitting of the land of Israel (partitioning) between the Jews and the Arabs was a way to keep peace in the region, which the Palestinians did not approve as it recognized Israel as a country; which had not been the case for them.
2. The number of Jewish and Arab hostiles had increased in the result of the war, causing Britain to give up the mandate over Palestine. Israel is also becoming larger in the result of war, and becoming compact and very powerful; especially with the support of the United States.
3. Palestinian refugees were recognized to some as traitors, for living in Israel. They were denied to live in their homeland when they returned, by the Israelis. The people of Israel consider the Palestinians as terrorists, which they do not see themselves as. They are considered second class citizens by Israel.
Reflection on Part 3 Guide Questions: 1. What role did the international community play in the 1967 War?
The international community partially played a role of mis-communication,serving as instigators; as the Soviets caused conflict because of their mis-communications with Syria saying that Israelis would attack. The UN worked as a peacemaker to this war, by creating the UN resolution 242.
2. How can "language be used to one's advantage? (UN resolution 242)
Language can be used to one's advantage in the case of the resolutions, as in one language (English), it was determined that only some of the territory would be taken, where as the British one marked that all of the territory would be taken.
3. Evaluate the treatment of Palestinian refugees by Israelis after the war? what are some possible reasons for this treatment?
After the war, Palestinian refugees were treated in such a way that their basic political rights as well as the civil liberties were denied to them, as well as freedom of expression, speech, and press and political association. They were treated as second class citizens, because they were possible culprits of terrorists, as well as the desire to have en entirely Jewish nation.
Reflection on Part 4 Guide Questions:
Evaluate Israel's response to the 1st Intifada. How could it have been handled differently?
There were many acts of civil disobedience taking place, which resulted in Israel taking part in massive arrests. Between 1987-1991, Israeli forces killed over 1,000 Palestinians, 200 under 16. This could have been handled in a non violent way, as it stirred up more conflict
Evaluate the US role in the peace attempts in the region. What were the causes of successes and failures?
The United Sates served as a mediator between the two countries but they supported Israel. They worked to make agreements but also added military aid. There were times where the United states was more firm with Israel, and some believed that they should have been stronger towards Israel.
Assess the role of Israel and the PLO in attempts at peace.
Israel worked to have peace talks, but feared the terrorists as well as the Hamas groups. The Hamas was their biggest fear, and they did not want to have to give away their own land and shrink the size of Israel.
Reflection questions on Guide Questions 5: 1. Discuss the viewpoint of the Israelis and the Palestinians on the barrier between Israel and the West Bank.
Since the Israelis knew it would not be possible for them to take over the West Bank, they built the wall because they were in favor of it. The Palestinians were not in favor of this, since it split their communities into two, blocking major trade routes. 2. What do you see as the major stumbling blocks in the attempted peace talks discussed in this section?
It was not working along with Obama's plan, due to the fact that his administration had been holding him back, which he is not capable of solving at this time.
Reflection Questions on Guide Questions 6: 1. Do you think Palestine should be a full member of the UN? Why or why not?
Due to the fact that Palestine is not yet a complete nation, I don't think they should yet be a member of the United Nations. Israel as well as Palestine are in conflict, and neither should yet be a member of the UN in my opinion. 2. Evaluate how a lasting peace could be achieved in this conflict. Give specific evidence from your work
I believe that lasting peace could be achieved if they had performed better conversations with peace and if they could come to an agreement of splitting the land into two.
The message of this cartoon video was to identify that in this war, Israel is also considered a victim, who is fighting for the rights that the believe they are deserving of. But, this biased view is only allowing us to see the side regarding Palestine, and their view point, so the viewers tend to sympathize with them. Israel was fighting in defense, and that defense mechanism was seen by others as an act of bullying, because they are not able to see what caused them to act in such a way. The instigating child is a representation of Palestine, whereas the bigger child is a representation of Israel who is being bullied.
The bias in this video is that Israel is in fact the victim, and Palestine is constantly instigating into the coming of a bigger war. Israel is taking the actions that they have, in defense for themselves, and feel the need to overcome this conflict although they were not the ones to bring it up.
In the late 1880's a group of Zionists traveled to Palestine to see what it offered as a Jewish homeland. One Zionist said, when he returned to Europe;
"The Bride is beautiful but she is married to another man"
-This quote is identifying that although Palestine seems as a very beautiful and intriguing place to settle for a Jewish homeland, it has already been occupied by the Palestinians, who control it.
Six Day War Video Notes:
